A lunar eclipse occurs only when the moon passes behind the earth and so the earth blocks the sun’s rays from striking the moon. When Sun, Earth and Moon are aligned, with the Earth in the middle, this can occur. In comparison to a solar eclipse the lunar eclipse is visible on the whole night site of the earth.
